Trek to Machu Picchu Day 3: An easy day on the legs

Posted on 18 June 202418 June 2024 by Werner

The morning began much like the previous one: pitch dark, shivering cold, a knock on the door, a warm smile, and a lovely cup of coca leaves tea to greet us. While it was still chilly, the temperature was noticeably warmer than the previous morning due to the much lower elevation of 2900m compared to 3800m. However, this small win was diminished by the fact that our clothes were still soaked from the previous day.

Setting off for the day through the village walkways.

Today was going to be an easy day, so the mood was relaxed and playful rather than nervous anticipation. We enjoyed pleasant strolls along deep valleys, with a gradual decline. Along the way, we were shown an hallucinogenic plant called the trumpet plant, used in Ayahuasca rituals. It’s common for travellers to partake in Ayahuasca, and for some, it’s even the sole purpose of their journey to the Amazon. Coincidentally, we had a similar plant in my childhood backyard, and I almost died from eating it, so an Ayahuasca experience was a big no-no for me.

As we neared the end of the valley after a few hours of walking, we passed by farms and sampled various exotic fruits within reach. The group was quite spread out, and those of us in the front found a small food stall with some hammocks to relax in while waiting for the others to catch up.

  • The beautiful scenery as we meander through the valley.
  • Anton engaging in some relaxation.
  • Jana, joining the relaxation club too.

Setting off again after a brief rest, we soon reached the lunch spot, which was also our final stop of the day. Unexpectedly, I received the sad news that after lunch, we would be parting ways with Jana, the two French guys, and the two Israeli girls, who were on the four-day trek while the rest of us were on the five-day trek. The remaining group consisted of Anton, Raj, Oliver, Felicity, and me. We would also merge with another group, one we had seen at our lunch spots but had never interacted with. The mood was a bit grim due to the impending goodbyes. We had bonded a lot as a group, and the dynamics would change from here on out. We ate lunch, shared a few laughs, and took our last photo together as the original group. It was certainly a heavy goodbye.

The last photo of the original group together.

After a moody lunch, we set to regain our good spirits and our sights on reaching the hot springs about 20 kilometres away. Walking wasn’t an option, so we needed a ride. The tour group, which was also associated with our accommodation, offered a taxi service, but at the steep price of about $15 per person. With about 13 people in our newly merged group, this was at least 5 times the price than local transport would have cost. Oli, Felicity, and I immediately refused, seeing it as clear tourist exploitation. We tried to unite the group to haggle the price down, but they folded and accepted the cost.

Determined to stand against this exploitation, Oli, Felicity, and I scoured the village for a ride from a local resident. Even with just four people, it seemed like a worthwhile proposition for someone willing to drive us to the hot springs. We found a family across the road from our accommodation willing to take us, but they first needed to check with the accommodation owners. Unfortunately, the owners denied the local family the chance to earn some money from the tourists, which made us furious just on the principles.

Undeterred, we soon spotted a local taxi that travelled between villages and engaged in negotiations. Since the driver wasn’t from our village, he wasn’t influenced by our accommodation owners and agreed to take us for significantly less. At that point, the exact price didn’t matter as much as avoiding the exploitative service from our accommodation. We were thrilled with our small victory, supporting a free market where more local people could also benefit from the tourism passing through their villages.

The local taxi taking us through the jungle to the hot springs.

Arriving at the hot springs, I was struck by how developed it was. I had expected a wild pool in the mountains, but it looked more like a resort, which was a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, we weren’t going to let a little commercialisation stop us from enjoying our first shower in three days.

The instructions we received upon entering were a bit confusing, but we knew we had to shower before entering the pools. Anton headed toward a small waterfall, thinking it was the shower. The water was cold, which was a letdown since the weather wasn’t exactly warm. Luckily, before joining him, I scanned the area and spotted a more official shower area. Testing it, I found it was hot! There were enough shower heads for all of us to shower simultaneously. We even discovered some soap and shampoo that someone had left behind, which we shared among ourselves. What a score!

It was a deeply bonding moment as the four of us savoured a warm shower outdoors, amidst the breathtakingly lush Peruvian mountain landscape after three days of challenging hiking. It felt raw and invigorating, a true celebration of being alive. Stripped of modern comforts, we rediscovered a primal joy in bathing in nature’s embrace.

Once we felt satisfactorily clean, we eagerly entered the hot springs, which featured four pools ranging from the coldest to the warmest. After enjoying the bliss of the hottest pool for a while, we decided to capture the moment with a photo before we got out. Olly, already out and wearing just a towel, kindly agreed to take the picture for us. He snapped one shot but then tried to get a better angle by crouching down. In his haste, he forgot that he wasn’t wearing any underwear under the towel. As he squatted, inadvertently exposing his jewels, we all burst out laughing, much to Olly’s confusion. Eventually, he caught on, but by then, the damage and eager to rest.had been done. As scarring as this unsolicited image was, it will forever etch the events of that day into my memory, and for that, I’m happy to have been an unwilling witness.

  • The poto Olly took with me keeping my eye closed in case of any additional “flashing”.
  • The view from the dining area deck.
  • The kitchen and shop area of our accomodation.
  • Just arrived eagerly awaiting lunch.
  • Anton chilling away.
  • Our huts for the evening.

Returning and leaving again always stirs mixed emo Returning and leaving again always stirs mixed emotions. The past few months has been a wonderful ride. Filled with family, friends, a wedding, hours in voting queue, mountain adventures, plenty of sunrises and a masochistic amount winter surfing. Until next time, South Africa. ✌️✈️
For four unforgettable days, our trusty land cruis For four unforgettable days, our trusty land cruisers carried us from Tupiza through the surreal and awe-inspiring landscapes of Uyuni. 🌍✨ From the peaks of the high Andes, across the Altiplano, to the shimmering white expanse of the world's largest salt flats.

I don't recall the exact location of this photo, so I also don't know the exact altitude. However, I'd estimate it to be on the higher side of 4000m.

I still have plenty of beautiful photos, and now that I'm settled in South Africa for a while, I think I'll share a few of my favorites.

This morning, I found myself reminiscing about Chr This morning, I found myself reminiscing about Christmas 2023. I decided to flee the typical commercial scene of Western Christmas and head to one of my favourite places on earth: the spellbinding Varanasi.

Varanasi is a place that challenges all of your preconceived notions. It's a place where a glimpse into the raw essence of human life can be found in all its forms. While movies portray European cities as the epitome of medieval times, today that view is merely reflected in their architecture. In Varanasi, however, it still feels like one has stepped back in time. Life here seems simple and hard by western standards, yet there's a radiating essence to it. Your senses go into overdrive as you witness the full spectrum of human nature. From routine chores like doing laundry and bathing in the Ganges river to witnessing open cremation ceremonies for the deceased, Varanasi offers a truly profound experience.

It's a place unlike anything on earth, a place that will always hold permanent residence in my heart.

It's a place of sun, surf, sea, storms, and the occasional scorpion. A place where the days were filled with friendships, and our bellies with of curry and rice.

Balancing surfboards while dodging the killer buses from hell on a scooter or rushing the paddle out to avoid the traffic on the waves, the morning commutes meant something different here. I usually had more surf sessions a day than cups of coffee.

The sunsets were absolutely magical and we always find ourselves in their presence. Whether sneaking in wave session until it's so dark we can't see the waves anymore, or relishing a freshly opened coconut as we watched the sun slowly sink below the horizon lighting up the skies in the most beautiful hues.

The route itself is actually really easy, but as soon as we arrived we were head on against the elements...

It's been quite a while since I've last posted a It's been quite a while since I've last posted a picture of somewhere pretty. It's not that I haven't been anywhere pretty. On the contrary. I've been backpacking South - and Central America for the last 7 months and have certainly stumbled onto many picture worthy locations. This time, however, I wanted to travel more mindfully by limiting how much I integrate social media into my travel routine. I wanted to be present in my surroundings and not concerned about keeping up appearances. I still enjoy taking photos, but for various reasons I have also taken significantly less than my last big trip in Asia.

Enough of my life story and on to the picture... This one was taken on my birthday where I visited the seriously impressive Perito Moreno Glacier down in Patagonia. Shortly after this photo was taken, the large block of ice you see floating in a background had a piece of itself broken off resulting in a thunderous smash into the water. I later realised this would be going on throughout the day as the massive glacier parts with hundreds of shards on a daily basis.

The magnitude of the horrors that occurred at this The magnitude of the horrors that occurred at this place still haunts me years after my visit. Unimaginable suffering at an unfathomable scale. It's difficult to convey in words how heavy the mere thoughts of the events weigh on you as gaze upon a place that knew only suffering.

On 27 January 1945 the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated and today serves as a remembrance to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.

The photo is taken of flowers and candles added by visitors and laid on top of the rubble of the destroyed gas chamber in Auschwitz 2 - Birkenau close to the city of Krakow in Poland.

Even though it was still autumn, we had to get to the hut via a rather treacherous trek that required snowshoes. It was my first snowshoe experience and ended up being a lot of fun, even though it turned out I am terrible at snowshoeing 😂

What an epic introduction to the Italian Dolomites What an epic introduction to the Italian Dolomites this was. The first two shots were taken on the other side of Val d'Ambiéz via Ferrata route that takes you over the peak to this partly snow cover skree valley. The pictures don't capture the awe of the landscape as you cross the peak to the other side. Besides being awe struck, I also had a great sense of relief to have reached the peak as my hands were desperately cold from clasping on to the iron holds at zero temperature without any gloves.

I'm standing right on top of Tarn cave, a well covered, north facing cave that would be a great spot to spend a night or two to enjoy this magnificent view at dawn. One can't really see the mountains in great detail here since this was shot directly into the sun, but they're quite spectacular and aptly named the Devil's knuckles.

Winter in the Drakensberg definitely has its charm Winter in the Drakensberg definitely has its charms. For one, the day temperature is perfect for hiking. It might start off on the chilly side, but once it gains momentum it can brighten up to sizzling 20 C. The perfect temperature to seek out the sun as apposed to cursing it. Due to it being the dry season, the mountains are dressed with golden brown coat. So if lush green is your thing, best come during the summer months.

I immediately jumped into my Transkei journey by hiking 61 kms through the rural villages along the coast from Port St John's to infamous Coffee Bay. An experience that humbles you in so many ways.

The entire stretch embodies a rural lifestyle that beats on a different rhythm. Traditional thatch roofed rondawels scatters across the never ending grass covered hills that roll right up to the coastline ending in majestically towering cliffs that overlook the warm Indian ocean. The Xhosa people, the majority inhabitants, are incredibly friendly and along the way I was only ever greated with warmth and kindness. Everyday I was welcomed into their villages and spoilt with delicious traditional Xhosa bread and other treats whilst being enlightening on their way of life. I can honestly say, a piece of my heart now belongs to the Transkei.
